Mini Project | Gulliver’s Travels

Brief: After Summer some of us on the MA initiated a collective side project where each one of us create an illustration featuring a given colour from a colour wheel with the theme Travel. My assigned colour was Red. (Code 10R on the colour wheel below with colours of every participant)

I’ve decided to depict an image representing Gulliver’s Travels from Jonathan Swift’s book. Bellow some initial roughs’ toughs and research.

From the first sketches I’ve realized that I had to focus more on the color Red to fulfuil. Bellow some more colour studies.

I’ve decided to approach this project as opportunity to be more a more experimental. By using only analogue processes to make separated layers aiming for a Riso print. My process includes first a collage using envelope textures, package string and punch hole bits to reinforce the travel theme.

Then I’ve photocopied the base and doodled the characters using the random position of the dots as a base. Further adding textures to help on the contrast for the layers.

Here is the final image. Which reflecting back during the process of photocopying and risoprinting it brough textures and added noise that not necessarily were beneficial to reading the image, especially for the characters.
